Japanese Perspectives on Nature and Design


During the lecture, Professor Masahiko Kimura will share his thoughts on design and its future and will discuss similarities between views on aesthetics in Finland and Japan.

Masahiko Kimura works as an Executive Director of GK Graphics in Tokyo, Japan. He teaches graphic design and typography at Kyoto University of Art and Design and is also a vice-president of Society of Typography in Japan and a visiting professor at several universities in Japan and China.

Masahiko’s work focuses on design of signage systems, brand communication and product development for commercial and non-commercial clients. His recent project, commissioned by the Japanese city of Hida, uses historical and cultural heritage of the site to create a coherent visual system for outdoor navigation and signage.

He is an author of many articles including “Setting of Alphabet in Vertical lines”, “Typeface and Warm Red Color”, and “Producing the Voice of an Organization”. The latest is published by IDEA magazine in Japan. His work is acknowledged by international awards including New York TDC Award, a Gold Medal from Japanese Package Design Association, a Sign Design Gold Award from Japan Sign Design Association, and Brunel Award (UK).
